BLOG 4: The Evolution of Traditional to New Media | Laboratory

We had a review on Tradition to New media Eras. We were then tasked to create a timeline on our exposure through a presentation software. Rubrics were given and various sites were suggested such as Tiki-Toki, Time Glider, OurStory, Capzles, Read Write Think, Xtimeline, TimeToast and Dipity.

I chose to create a timeline using TimeToast because it is user-friendly unlike other sites I tried.
Here is the link to my personal timeline:

The next day Mr.Opiana asked us to answer about the Internet of Things. What came into my mind about the Internet of Things is that it is about the World Wide Web knowing all the history of everything. But as we continued I learned a lot. Here are the questions that were asked:

In your own words, define Internet of Things
The Internet of Things is a connection of electronic materials via web where they are able to collect, send and exchange data.

What brought this theory about?
There have been visions of machines communicating with one another since the early 1800s. Machines have been providing direct communications since the telegraph was developed in the 1830s and 1840s. Described as “wireless telegraphy,” the first radio voice transmission took place on June 3, 1900, providing another necessary component for developing the Internet of Things.

Do you like the concept of IoT? Why or why not?
I like the concept of IoT because it makes everyday activities easier. When a device is connected with another device or appliance it will be easier and faster for us to operate and finish our tasks.

In what situations do you encounter IoT in the Philippines?
Whenever I ride the LRT I need to load my Beepcard. Payment and ticketing system in the reloading system is easier because of the IoT. Another one is when I Iog-in on one of my accounts for example my Google. It is easier for me to sign-up or register on applications and sites.

How do you think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
Everyone with media devices will be affected. If people are properly guided and introduced to the Internet of Things, work and lifestyle will greatly improve. Careless and irresponsible use of IoT might result in chaos.

What do you think is the relationship / cause and effect of IoT in media and information literacy?
When a person is media and information literate he or she has the essential skills and competencies that allows him or her engage with individuals using media and other information providers effectively, as well as develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize and become active citizens. If he or she is media and information literate I am sure that he or she knows how to use IoT effectively.
